Leica III

Patton's Camera
General Patton, pictured here, carried an early Leica III in a black finish.
The Leica III is a Barnack model rangefinder camera introduced by Leica in 1933, and produced in parallel with the Leica II series. Several models were produced over the years, with significant improvements.
The Leica III uses a coupled rangefinder distinct from the viewfinder. The viewfinder is set for a 50mm lens; use of shorter or longer lenses requires installing an alternate viewfinder on the accessory socket.
1937 Leica III
Here is a 1937 Leica III owned by one of our members. You can see the different lenses, filters, and cases that one can get with a vintage Leica. Some Early Canon lenses use the same fitting as the Leica M Mount and are interchangeable with Leica Lenses.

War Correspondents
In this picture, tucked behind the TLR Rolleiflex, is a Leica III Model camera being carried by George Silk. Silk is seen with a similar setup later in the war when coming into Germany.
Modern Usage
This picture taken with the 1937 Leica above really illustrates the quality of the photographs taken on the Leica platform.
